Yakima Sunrise Rotary Club, sponsors of an annual October Storyfest at the Yakima Valley Regional Library the past few years, has generously offered the museum  the opportunity of hosting the event this year.  As an opportunity to provide a unique visit to the museum for Yakima Valley schools, the program Tales of the Trails will be offered as an optional museum visit.

Tales of the Trails will run November 18-21, 1998 in the Great Hall at the Yakima Valley Museum.  Set against the backdrop of the soon-to-be remodeled Oregon Trail exhibit, the program will be presented three times each day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for school groups, with a special performance on Saturday for all museum visitors.

The program will begin with a short introduction by Keith Adams, one of Yakima Valley Museum's  docents, who comes equipped with a cowboy hat and the persona of an old-time cattle rustler.

Tom Galt, a storyteller from Renton, will then begin his stories of the West, the Oregon Trail, Native Americans, and take on the characters of immigrants to the area.  An experienced and confident storyteller, he has appeared at schools throughout the state and such diverse places as the Kittitas County Fair in Ellensburg, Northwest Folklife Festival, and the Burke Museum.

In addition to storytelling, the program will also feature Nancy Stewart, whose repertoire of children's songs has delighted children with four performances for the Saturday Specials program.  Nancy has an amazing capacity for engaging children in the performance and soliciting participation from the audience.  The songs from her most recent album, Singin' Sidesaddle, became a perfect match for this program.
